Y como lo prometido es deuda aquí va lo mejor y lo (más) mejor de nuestro Safari en Kruger y Sabi Sands (Sudáfrica), esperamos que os guste.

And as I promised, here is the Top-Ten and Worst -Ten of Safari in Kruger and Sabi Sands (South Africa), enjoy it!

Top Ten Safari en Sudáfrica:

1.-Observar un leopardo en soledad (él y nosotros), eso no tiene precio. Ese bolso  que tanta ilusión te hace se pondrá viejo (a no ser que inviertas en un Birkin o un Chanel 2.55), ese abrigo pasará de moda. Pero ese momento, las sensaciones, los olores, el aire en tu cara, todo, y digo TODO lo que rodea a ver a una de las criaturas más bellas de la tierra subida a un árbol, a tan sólo 3 metros de ti. Ver cómo baja de un árbol, pasa de una rama a otra con una agilidad pasmosa. ¡Qué torpes somos los humanos! Su pelaje (el mejor outfit que he visto en mi vida) tanta  belleza, casi «muérome» de Síndrome de Stenhdal.

Top Ten Safari in South Africa:

1.-Observing a leopard in solitude (him and us) this is priceless. That bag that makes you get crazy will become old (unless yo by a Birkin or a 2.55 Chanel), that coat will go out of style; but that moment, the sensations, the smells, the air in your face, everything, and I say everything that surrounds to watch one of the most beautiful creatures on earth rising to a tree, only 3 meters from you. Watching how it falls from a tree, passes from one branch to another with amazing agility. How awkward we humans are! His coat (the best outfit ever) so much beauty, almost dying of  Stenhdal Syndrome.

2.-Observar a una familia de rinocerontes pastando tranquilamente. Sorprendente este animal con pintas de prehistórico o tanque militar, paseando tranquilamente en grupo. Qué paz, qué calma, difícil expresar con palabras toda la belleza de esta estampa. Se me saltan las lagrimas (No será que estoy escuchando la banda sonora de «Memorias de Africa» mientras escribo, no) Parece mentira que algunos los cacen simplemente para conseguir sus cuernos embuidos por extrañas promesas de potencia sexual. Es una pena. A veces el ser humano es el menos humano de los seres.

2.-Observing a family of rhinos grazing peacefully. Surprising this animal kind of prehistoric or military tank, walking quietly in group. What peace, what calmness, really difficult to express with words all the beauty of this picture. I am almost in tears (Yeah, I must confess I’m listening «Out of Africa» soundtrack ​​as I write) It seems unlikely that some simply hunt them to get their horns incarnated by strange promises of sexual potency. What a pity. Sometimes the human being is the least human of beings.

3.- Encontrar a Stumpy (achaparrada), una elefante a la que daban por muerta  hace más de tres años. Stumpy tuvo un accidente de pequeña con una pinza mecánica y su trompa quedó casi inutilizada, de tal manera que tenía serias dificultades para comer y respirar. Pero en uno de nuestros safaris por Kruger nos la encontramos. Allí estaba comiendo y respirando a su manera, y lo mejor de todo, no estaba sola, ¡tenía una cría! La emoción de nuestro guía Drikus, una de las personas que ayudó a su recuperación, nos contagió a todos.

3.- Finding Stumpy, an elephant that was taken for dead more than three years ago. Stumpy had an accident and her trunk was almost unused, so she had a lot of trouble eating and breathing. But we happily find her at Kruger! There she was eating and breathing in her own way, and best of all, she was not alone, she had a baby! The emotion of our guide Drikus, one of the persons who helped his recovery, infected us all.

4.-África en todo su esplendor, su luz, sus paisajes, el sol, el polvo en suspensión, sus atardeceres, sus amaneceres, la naturaleza desatada, la naturaleza en mayúsculas, sus tormentas, rayos  y truenos. Sentirse pequeño, porque somos pequeños.

4. Africa in all its splendor, its light, its landscape, the sun, the dust in suspension, its sunsets, its sunrises, unleashed nature, nature in capital letters, its storms, lightning and thunder. Feeling small, because we are small.

5.- Completar los Big Five por segunda vez en tu vida, y esperemos que no sea la última.

6.-El Gran Parque Kruger, más de 19.000 m2 llenos de vida y fauna salvaje. Recomendamos especialmente alojarse en la zona de Skukuza y acercarse a Sabi River para poder ver a leopardo.

7.-Contemplar a más de 50 buitres y  hienas comer el cadáver de un viejo elefante. El primer día el elefante estaba casi entero, veíamos a los buitres entrar en la caja torácica para alimentarse, el último día ya sólo quedaban sus patas traseras. Parece mentira que estos girones de piel fueran un gran elefante hace tan sólo una semana. La ley de la jungla. Y el insoportable hedor. Eau d’Elefant Mort.

7.-Contemplate more than 50 vultures and hyenas eat the corpse of an old elephant. The first day the elephant was almost whole, we saw the vultures enter the rib cage to feed, the last day only his hind legs were left. 8.-La reservas privadas, y la posibilidad de poder salirse del camino cuando se divisa un animal y acercarte tanto a él que a veces pasas miedo, no sabría explicar lo qué se siente tan cerca de un animal en libertad.

9.- Aprender cosas de los animales que seguramente estén en los libros, pero que es mucho mejor aprenderlas mientras las vives. Por ejemplo que las hienas son unas magníficas cazadoras y que nos libran de un montón de enfermedades como el E.coli o el ántrax natural , o que los rinocerontes hacen sus deposiciones de manera diferente según quieran pelea o vayan en son de paz. Lo sé, esta «hienita» te la llevarías a casa.

9.- Learning things about animals that are probably in books, but it is much better to learn them while you live them. For example that hyenas are magnificent hunters and that they free us from a lot of diseases like E.coli or natural anthrax, or that rhinos make their depositions in a different way depending on whether they want to fight or not. I know, you want this cutie hyena as pet. 

10.-Alojarse dentro del propio parque o de una reserva y hacer «Glamping». Esta es una de las mejores experiencias, a pesar de tener a tres ranas cantantes de ópera metidas en la piscina cada noche. Las cambio sin duda por los borrachos de debajo de mi casa, que entonan peor.

10.-Stay inside the park or a Private Reserve and «Glamping«. This is one of the best experiences, despite having three opera singer frogs tucked into the pool every night. I change them without a doubt for the drunks on my street, who sing really worse.

11.-La gente, la gente es esencial en este tipo de viajes. Siempre conoces gente que tiene tus mismas inquietudes aunque seáis muy diferentes, cada uno de un país distinto, con una lengua diferente, pero al final todos tenéis algo en común que es lo que os ha llevado hasta allí, y eso es el ansia, ansia por conocer, ansia por la aventura, ansia por ir más allá de los libros y los documentales. Hemos conocido a gente genial en este viaje tanto compañeros como guías, gracias a todos ellos para hacer este viaje mejor.

11.- The people, people are essential in all travels. You always know people who have your same concerns, even if you are very different, each from a different country,  with a different language, but at the end you all have something in common that is what has led you there, and that is craving, craving to know, craving to adventure, craving to go beyond books and documentaries. We have met great people on this trip, both companions and guides, thanks to all of them for making this trip better.

12.-La comida sudafricana, superrica, aguacates, verduras, muuucha carne. Sesi, gracias por cocinar cada día para nosotros. Y por  cierto hemos comido uno de los mejores solomillos de nuestra vida, y mira que somos del Norte, en el restaurante del Hotel Premier OR Tambo.

12.-South African food is superb. Avocados, vegetables, lots of meat. Sesi, thank you for cooking every day for us. And we have to recommend to try the tenderloin in the Restaurant of the Premier OR Tambo Hotel.

13.-Alojarse en Torburnlea B&B (Nelspruit) una granja de 1923 construida por colonos ingleses, respetando los planos originales y con un montón de antigüedades. Cada rincón lleno de detalles.  La grandeza de las pequeñas cosas.

13.-Staying at Torburnlea B & B (Nelspruit) a 1923 farm built by English settlers, respecting the original plans and with a lot of antiques. Each corner full of details. The greatness of the little things.

14.-La carretera panorámica N4 de Machadodorp a Nelspruit, coger la ruta del Norte en vez de la del Sur, una ruta espectacular con sus cortados en la piedra, su frondosa vegetación, las famosas rocas en forma de rondavel y el río a tus pies.

Worst Ten safari en Sudáfrica:

1.-Los resquicios del apartheid, se notan. Se nota en sus miradas, en los blancos, en los negros, en el servicio, la mirada de Stanford, la mirada de Sesi que intuimos lleva trabajando desde antes de tener nariz. ¡Qué afortunados somos! Este es quizás el motivo más importante por el que hay que viajar, no sólo por conocer sino para tomar perspectiva, salir de la rueda y valorar, valorar lo que tenemos, lo pequeño y lo profundo. Lo que realmente nos hace felices y afortunados.

2.-En Sudáfrica el soborno, o al menos el intento de este, está a la orden del día. Y para muestra estos dos intentos, alguno conseguido y todo.

En nuestro primer día nos paró la policía, un agente se acercó y nos dijo que íbamos a 97Km/h en un tramo de 80Km/h, no se lo creía ni él, recién llegados con un montón de horas de vuelo encima y conduciendo por la izquierda, para carreritas estábamos. En fin. Mi consejo siempre pedir la foto del radar, no ponerse nervioso, sonreír y con confianza decirle al señor en cuestión que os la muestre, y siempre , siempre, añadir un «Sir», no cuesta nada y funciona en todas partes, un «Señor», un «Usted» o «Monsieur», hace que el otro vea que le tienes respeto y que eres educado. Te sacará de más de un apuro. La historia acabó con el policía haciendo que iba a buscar la foto inexistente, por supuesto, y dejándonos marchar con un «Os voy a dar una segunda oportunidad» Detrás iban parando a todos los coches de turistas, me imagino que alguno picaría.

Nuestro segundo intento de soborno fue por parte de otro policía que en vez de indicarnos dónde estaban las cabinas telefónicas llamó el desde su móvil y nos preguntó directamente que qué le habíamos traído de Mauricio. Vamos, más bien fue el pago (caro) por una llamada no solicitada.

En fin, llevad monedas y billetes pequeños preparados, a veces te pillan por sorpresa y no sabes por dónde salir.

3.-La inseguridad de Johannesburgo, si queréis aprender más sobre el apartheid recomendamos hacer una visita Soweto en compañía de algún local.

4.- Que en el Aeropuerto de El Cairo esté prohibido llevar prismáticos y no te avisé ni la aerolínea, ni las azafatas, ni nadie y tengas que facturarlos cuando llegas allí de malas maneras. Lo bueno es que  gracias a esta experiencia conocimos  a Raúl y a Johana, genial pareja de Albacete con los que coincidimos a la vuelta y compartimos aventuras ¡Un abrazo, pareja!

Como veis de lo malo no hacemos foto, ¿para qué? Mejor olvidar o darle la vuelta y convertirlo en bueno, porque sin estas pequeñas cosas la aventura no sería tal.

Worst Ten safari in South Africa:

1.-The remnants of apartheid. You can see it in their eyes, in the whites, in the blacks, in the service, the eyes of Stanford, the eyes of Sesi that we intuit has been working since she was a very young girl. How lucky we are! On our first day the police stopped us, an agent approached us and told us that we were going to 97Km / h on a stretch of 80Km / h, just imposible. We recommend to bring coins and small bills prepared, just in case.

3.-The unsafety of Johannesburg, if you want to learn more about apartheid we recommend a visit to Soweto in the company of a local.

4.- Important note: At Cairo Airport it is forbidden to bring binoculars and I did not warn you the airline, the hostesses, or anybody and you have to bill them when you get there in bad manners. The good thing is that thanks to this experience we met Raul and Johana, a great couple from Albacete with whom we agreed to return and share adventures. A hug, couple!

As you can see we do not take a pics of bad experiences. Better to forget or turn it into good, because bad experiences are also part of the adventure.
